ششمین فیلم هومن سیدی در مقام فیلم‌ساز، فیلمی متفاوت در کارنامه فیلم‌سازی وی به شمار می‌آید که علاوه بر اینکه شبیه هیچ‌یک از آثار این کارگردان خلاق نیست، گامی جلو در زمینه‌ی فیلم‌نامه‌نویسی و کارگردانی برای هومن سیدی و گروهش محسوب می‌شود.
«جنگ جهانی سوم»، حاصل همکاری مشترک آزاد جعفریان، آرین وزیر دفتری و هومن سیدی در مقام نویسندگان فیلم‌نامه است که توانسته فیلم‌نامه‌ای سنجیده، ظریف و کم اشکال را خلق کنند که به نظر می‌رسد برگ برنده و دلیل موفقیت فیلم در وهله نخست همین فیلم‌نامه درجه‌یک آن باشد. اغلب اتفاقات فیلم با زمینه‌سازی مناسب انجام‌شده و کاشت و برداشت‌های به‌موقع درام‌نویسی باعث شده فیلم علاوه بر اینکه فاقد صحنه‌ها و موقعیت‌های اضافی و زائد باشد، جذابیت کشف و شهود و تماشای چندباره آن را ممکن ساخته است.
«جنگ جهانی سوم»، در ریتم اما متفاوت عمل کرده به نحوی که در نیمه نخست آن شامل ریتمی به نسبت کند است که صَرف مقدمه و معرفی شخصیت‌ها و انگیزه‌های اتفاقات بعدی می‌شود، اما هرچه می‌گذرد و از نیمه عبور می‌کند، درگیرکننده‌تر، جذاب‌تر و تماشایی‌تر می‌شود به‌گونه‌ای که تماشاگری که حدود ۴۵ دقیقه ابتدایی را دوام آورده و آن را گذرانده، بعید است که از دقیقه ۶۰ به بعد بتواند مسیر درام را رها و از تعلیق و پیگیری داستان سرباز زند.
«جنگ جهانی سوم» را از چند لایه می‌توان تحلیل و واکاوی کرد. در این فیلم شاهد یک عشق تماشایی و دراماتیک میان یک کارگر ساده بی‌کس‌وکار و یک دختر کارگر جنسی هستیم که به‌خودی‌خود می‌توانست یک ایده جذاب و داستانی مستقل باشد اما بخشی از درام «جنگ جهانی سوم» شده است.
در بُعد دیگر شاهد تحول شخصیت شکیب با بازی محسن تنابنده بوده‌ایم که تغییری باورپذیر و تأثیرگذار است که این تحول در کنار بخش ملودرام و عاشقانه فیلم، به پیوندی جالب و همراهی برانگیز بدل شده است. معجزه عشق و انگیزه شکیب برای رسیدن و همراهی با لادن باعث شده که شکیب دیگر آن شخصیت توسری‌خور، آرام و مظلوم ابتدای فیلم نباشد و اتفاقی که در ادامه و فینال داستان از وی سر می‌زند باورپذیر و قابل‌درک باشد. البته بُعد و لایه دیگر شخصیتی شکیب به همان وجوه ساده و مظلوم و طبقه کارگری آن مربوط بوده که در مقابله با طبقه سرمایه‌دار تقابلی جذاب از آب درآمده است. از این نوع مواجهه‌های مظلوم و ظالم، قوی و ضعیف و کارگر و سرمایه‌دار که سبب تحقیر یک‌طرف و ظلم و گردن‌کلفتی طرف دیگر شده در فیلم‌ها و آثار سینمایی زیاد اتفاق افتاده است. فیلم «طلای سرخ» از جعفر پناهی، سریال «فارگو» فصل اول و فیلم «پرویز» از جمله آثاری هستند که تحقیر نقش اول آنها باعث کنشی قهرمانانه و متفاوت از وی شده که این تحول و دگرگونی یکی از جذابیت‌های اصلی این آثار بوده است. در «جنگ جهانی سوم» علاوه بر تحقیر، ماجرای عاشقانه لادن و شکیب هم در کنش‌های متأخر شکیب بسیار مؤثر بوده است.
«جنگ جهانی سوم» در ورای درام عاشقانه خود، راه و رسم هیتلر شدن و دیکتاتوری را نیز می‌آموزد. تحقیر و ظلم از مهم‌ترین عواملی است که باعث طغیان یک شخصیت ساده و مظلوم و تبدیل آن به هیولایی خونخوار و آدم‌کش می‌شود که دیگر نه دوست و آشنا می‌شناسد و نه قرار است منطقی و انسانی عمل کند. رفتاری که در طول تاریخ سینما دستمایه ساخت شخصیت‌های جذاب، کنش‌مند و سمپاتی شده که الگویی جذاب برای شخصیت‌پردازی و کنش‌های قهرمانانه به شمار می‌آید.
